What are your thoughts on SurvivalBlog.com?

I have mixed views.

On the one hand, there is a LOT of useful information over there and I've learned a great deal, plus found some sources for things I would have been otherwise clueless about. The pre-1899 dealer springs to mind, presently.

On the other hand Rawles, though a right-thinking dude in many respects, troubles me in others. For example, if anybody I knew personally called their spouse a Memsahib I'd think they had injured their brain stem somehow. I think the whole Paratus Farms thing has a Jim Jones vibe to it that I find, well... creepy. I'm also suspicious of anyone who makes announcements on where they stand on border control by prefacing it with "I am not a racist..." Just say what you think and who gives a damn about whether or not LULAC calls you names over it.

Your thoughts..?

Rawles recently quit his dayjob and is now just a full-time shill for his Advertisers. Buy this from my good friend ____________. Buy that from my other good friend ____________. The best sleeping bag is from my friend __________.
:bandit: <<< Rawles

I used to read his blog every day when it first started, but ever since he started asking for money the place went downhill. I check back once in a while, but the last few months I haven't found anything worth reading there.

That is why GIM does not take ads and we pay our own way... Thanks to the many members that have donated we keep that crap from being part of our site....

I still read all the blog posts. There is only so much you do with a daiy blog.

He wrote a great book and the blog is the only blog I checkup on (aside from survivalreportblog)...

I was also curious about the Memsahib nickname... I probably should have looked it up. Whats it mean?

As to the farm, I missed some of the blog and never made it up, but apparently he was trying to buy a few hundred acres and the subdividen it into 40 acre plots. Sounds like his own version of a neighborhood / subdivision. Is it susposed to be some kind of a commune?

Did not Jeff Cooper refer to his wife as the "Countess" ? Sort of the same thing Rawles does. Most of the people who have purchased items from his advertisers seem to be happy with the products and service.
Wiggy's bags are supposed to be the best on the Planet. I think the SEALS
use them. If you believe you are getting value from his site ,send him a cheque. If not don't.

I try to scan through it everyday and I consider it one tool in my toolbox of being aware of different aspects of preparedness. No one site is going to be the end all to beat all.

Rawles provides a valueable service and if there are certain aspects of his writings that one finds objectionable, then simply ignore them and take away what you find useful.

Regarding the advertising.....hey, the guy is trying to make a living and still provide us the information that we're looking for. As long as the products deliver as advertised, I've got no worries.

Isn't that what Bo Gritz tried, prior to Y2K? He bought acreage in Idaho, and tried to sell much smaller plots for people to put their trailers on or something?
